Diwali has got to the highlight on the Hindu calendar…well , it definitely is in our home and many Hindu homes across the world. We all have different ways in which we celebrate but the common denominator will have to be celebrating with special food and the lighting of diya’s ( lamps)
Diwali is a special time when friends and family meet , exchange presents and good wishes. It’s a time we celebrate the triumph of good over evil … light over darkness and peace and prosperity to all ! Without a religious discourse it is a celebration that brings people together . And when we are together…we eat!
The small of cardamom , sugary syrups and ghee waft through the air, it’s the time we get out the old recipe books and get busy in the kitchen. These were some of the best childhood memories. Soaking and chopping nuts , making wicks for the lamps and general merry making .
It was easy back then , living at home having family near by to create these memories…like most of my 20’s and part of my 30’s is a blur , I don’t remember much of Diwali as a young adult BUT now as I have my own family recreating the Diwali magic is so important to me.
As a young family we finding our way to make this period festive , it’s a time for giving , a time for reflection and a time of celebration and new beginnings.
